“THAT THEY MAY BE ONE” (JOHN 17:20) RE-EMPHASISING THE NEED FOR ECUMENISM IN NIGERIA By: Stanley Chilota Nwosu I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me, so that they may all be one... May they be one in us, so the world may believe that you have sent me (John 17:20-21) This prayer of Christ in the midst of His Passion reveals his innermost being and was no doubt heartfelt. For Christ, the unity of Christians is one of the things that will make the world to believe that he is the Saviour. For over hundred years of Christianity’s flourishing in Nigeria, it has recorded remarkable progress with particular reference to structural expansion and numerical strength; the spiritual aspect of the development cannot be left out too. There are numerous groups in Nigeria today, who go with the name Christians, some for commercial purposes, deception and just few with genuine intentions. In spite of these factors, the Nigerian Christians has ofte

WHEN UMUCHU ANCESTORS VISIT AT CHRISTMAS

WHEN UMUCHU ANCESTORS VISIT AT CHRISTMAS Every Christmas, My hometown Umuchu swiftly takes the shape of a fascinating mosaic of activities. Families forced apart by ingrained quest for survival that has scattered us all across diverse geographies often reunite in the village. Parents give their children out in marriage under the gaze of elders and keepers of the people’s mores. Illustrious sons and daughters come together to undertake development projects and often scholarship to youngsters who hold some promise. Age old disputes are resolved and the building bricks of peace are freshly laid. However, newly completed and tastily furnished homes are opened. The coronation of ozo and chieftaincy titles is given to men of calibers by the Igwe on the Ofala festival. And when you see a cloud of dust spiral upwards in the distance or hear the boom-boom of cannons, don’t panic; it is Christmas in Umuchu.  I have to say this, Umuchu is the best place to be at Christmas because everyone

MORAL RELATIVISM/DECADENCE IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY

Image
Preamble Man is a moral being, unique in creation and possessing higher powers. His actions are controlled by thoughts and emotions, desires and intention. Mans actions can be judged good or bad, praiseworthy or blameworthy, right or wrong. In the light of these, man is termed a “moral being.” Man is not just an animal, he is a person who can choose what he will do to an extent and who in some cases is responsible for his actions. By the virtue of being a moral being, man should not live without morality. Social problems provoke more philosophical reflection and debate than personal dilemmas because of their far reaching consequences. When many people are affected by a practice, many points of view will be voiced and resulting disputes calls for rational deliberations. The rules of conduct we have been following in our daily lives without conscious deliberation seems now to be modified or even replaced with moral relativism and such debate between moral relativism and objectivism accou

SOCIAL MEDIA; FRIEND OR FOE?

SOCIAL MEDIA; FRIEND OR FOE? (Ethics and Etiquette of Social Media) I came across the story of a young lady, whom was in love with a guy, and needed the father’s blessings on the relationship such that the two could get married. The post goes this way, “Dad, I’m in love with a boy who is far away from me, I am in Lagos and he lives in Onitsha. We met on a dating website, become friends on Facebook, had long chats on Whatsapp, he proposed to me on Skype and now, we have had two months relationship through Viber. Dad, I need your good wishes and blessings.” I was amazed with the Fathers reply which reads, “Wow! Really!! Then get married on Twitter, have fun on Wechat buy your kids on Amazon and send them to me through Paypal and if you fade up with your husband…sell him on Ebay”. In our contemporary era, the world is faced with the evolving cultures of modernity. And according to David Wells, the ubiquity of choice is among the most profound characteristics of modern times. We are faced

TREASURE WITHIN

An old beggar once lay on his deathbed. His last words were to his youngest son who had been his constant companion during his begging trips. "Nnaa" he said, I have nothing to give you except a cotton bag and a dirty bronze bowl which i got in my younger days, from the junk yard of a wealthy man. However, after the death of his father, the young boy continued begging, using the bowl his father gave him.  One day, a gold merchant dropped a coin in the boy's bowl and was surprise to hear a familiar clinking sound.  "Can i see your bowl?" Says the merchant. To his great surprise, he noticed that the beggars bowl was made of pure gold. Young man, why do you waste your time begging? You are a rich man. That bowl of yours is worth at least fifty thousand dollars. We are often like this beggar boy who failed to recognise and appreciate the value of his bowl. We fail to appreciate the infinite worth of the Holy Spirit living within us, sharing His gifts, fruits and char

The Vicissitude of Life "Nigerian Educational Systems have surprising outcomes. *The Smartest Students pass with First Class and get admitted to Medical and Engineering Schools.  *The Second Class Students get MBAs and LLBs to manage the First class Students. *The Third Class Students enter politics and rule both the First Class and the Second Class Students. *The Failures enter the underworld of crime and control politicians and businesses. *And best of all, those who did not attend school became prophets and Iman and everyone follows them. What a paradox of life!" This can only happen in Nigeria where corruption is the order of the day. #HassanKukah#
